Surely I won’t get caught out, will I?!

Someone within my membership group mentioned the other day that they had very nearly been caught out by an email from someone trying to hack into their Facebook account. Here are a few of the mitigating factors we discussed during the call, to ensure they are others remained safe.

If you don’t have two factor authentication set up, it can be quite a common occurrence to experience your Facebook account (or that of someone you know) being hacked into.

Firstly, I recommend setting up 2FA (2 factor authentication).

Secondly, here’s how to tell if an email you’ve received  from “Facebook” really is from Facebook:

If you get an email from someone asking you to do anything you should be able to tell if it’s genuine from the full email address. From your email you can click on the actual email address to view in full, or hit reply.

Once you’ve done this and it has ‘boatymcboatface.com’, for example, then you can tell it’s not genuine.

Use a common sense approach, check on the email address and if you’re ever unsure then assume it’s not genuine.

Definitely DO NOT click on any links!

Have you got a back up?

It’s a really good idea to ensure that you have a second person that you trust as admin on Facebook. Particularly if you have a Facebook business page because, for example, if your profile has been completely wiped or disappeared you will now have lost control of your business page. Suddenly, you won’t be able to change it, delete it, or add to it.

However, the hacker would be able to put all sorts on your business page and you wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.

By ensuring you have a second person as admin, if your account ever gets closed, for any reason, you can access it through the back door.

This is super important; I’ve seen so many people have their Facebook profiles closed down and then can’t get in touch with Facebook.

Build your email list and other owned assets

This whole saga is another reason why I always remind my clients that having an email list is incredibly important because you actually own that.

If you need any help with this or have any questions please get in touch.
